Practical Defensive Carbine, Level 2
This class teaches practical applications for those who want to become more familiar with their carbine weapon system.
PURPOSE: Provide the student with foundational knowledge on which to build their skills in the art of self-defense with a carbine. This is an intermediate-level course that builds upon the skill learned in the Level 1 course, and it is not a “stand and shoot” course – this is a very active class and requires the ability to shoot from all positions learned in Level 1 as well as shooting while moving. Successful completion of the Practical Defensive Carbine Level 1 or prior approval of the instructor is required for this class.
Topics:
Safety Briefing
Range Commands
Review of your Weapon System and basic marksmanship
Dry-fire and Live-fire drills, including
Understanding “battlefield zero” and use of optics
Ammunition Management - tactical and emergency reloads
Malfunction Clearing
Strong- and Weak-Side shooting (rifle and pistol)
Shooting on the move
Use of Cover and Concealment
Transition from Primary to Secondary weapon
Team movement
Debrief/After-Action Discussion
REQUIREMENTS:
An open mind, willingness to take instruction and the ability to challenge pre-conceived notions we’ve all learned from YouTube instructors and Hollywood. This course teaches only practical, real-world techniques.
Sturdy, close-toed shoes (no flip-flops or sandals). Running shoes/sneakers are acceptable, but over-the ankle boots are recommended due the uneven ground.
A functional carbine rifle, typically of the AR-15, AK-47 or comparable pistol-caliber carbine (such as a CZ Scorpion) and a functional compact or duty-sized pistol. This class is based upon the AR-15 rifle platform, but techniques can be adapted to other weapons systems.
A sturdy sling fitted to your rifle and a strong-side, outside the waistband holster for your pistol. Belt-mounted magazine holders for both pistol and rifle magazines are required, and a battle-belt or chest rig is highly recommended. This is not a “concealed” weapon course.
At least four hundred (400) rounds (rifle) and two hundred (200) rounds (pistol) of factory-loaded, brass-cased and copper-jacketed ammunition. No reloaded ammunition or steel-core (armor piercing) rounds are permitted (we will be shooting steel targets). Steel-cased ammunition is not recommended for the AR-15 platform, as it has a tendency to jam if your rifle is not clean. Please double-check your ammunition if you are using the AK-47 platform – the vast majority of 7.62x39mm ammo is steel core (including the “bi-metal” kind) and cannot be used on steel targets.
Red-dot and magnified optics are permitted (and in fact encouraged). All rifle optics are recommended to be sighted in at twenty-five (25) yards and pistol optics are recommended to be sighted in at ten (10) yards prior to class. If you have questions about how to properly sight-in your optic, contact the instructor prior to class. Back-up iron sights are recommended, but not required.
If you have battery-powered optics, please bring extra batteries. I haven’t had a class yet where somebody’s batteries didn’t fail.
Weather conditions are often rapidly changing in North Carolina, so please dress appropriately and in layers. Class is held rain or shine, as you cannot pick the weather for your gunfight. Please be aware that red-dot optics are rendered mostly useless when they are wet, so back-up irons are strongly recommended if you have a red-dot.
A packed lunch is recommended – food options are limited in the DPRC area and lunch will be held to a strict 1-hour time limit.
Water, lots of it. Hydration is important, as this will be an active class.
